The forest and peatland fires and smog, billed the worst in Indonesian history, still dominated medaia headlines this week, with thousands of hot spots covering Sumatra and Kalimantan. At least 19 people in Sumatra and Kalimantan have died, and mostly children, have been hospitalized because of severe respiratory illnesses caused by the haze. According to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), the ongoing haze crisis has resulted in more than 500,000 people in six provinces - Riau, Jambi, South Sumatra, West Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, and South Kalimantan - suffering from respiratory infections.
As evidence indicates that most hot spots are related to oil palm and pulp wood plantations, President has instructed Forestry and Environment Ministry to stop issuing new permits for peatland cultivation for monoculture, restore damaged peatland and review all peatland licenses that have been issued. Put bluntly, companies can no longer convert active forests and deep peat or any peat area into monoculture plantations, such as acasia for pulp and oil palm plantations.
Recent research by forest scientist at the Bogor, West Java-Based center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) found that the main cause of haze in Riau came from dry and deforested peatland, and not just from the slashing-and-burning of forested areas, as commonly thought. The research found that peat swamps in their natural state are resistant to fire because they are wet underground, but they can be highly flammable when they dry out and are degraded

If someone is having a nose bleed, your priority is to control the bleeding and keep their airway open.
Get them to sit down (not lie down) as keeping the nose above the heart will reduce bleeding.
Get them to lean forward (not backwards), to make sure the blood drains out through their pause every ten minutes, until the bleeding stops.
Encourage them not to speak, swallow, cough, spit or sniff because this may break blood clots that may have started to form in the nose.
If the bleeding is severe, or if it lasts more than 30 minutes, call for medical help.

Once upon a time there lived three neighbours in a beautiful village. Three of them were diligent farmers.
At one time the three neighbours were having trouble with their crops. All three fields had crops that were willing and infested with pests. Each day they would try different ideas to help their crops. The first one tried sing a scarecrow, the second used pesticides and the third built a fence on his field, all to no avail.
One day, the village head came by and called all three farmers. He gave them each a stick and asked them to break the stick. The farmers could break them easily. He then gave them a bundle of three stick and asked them to break it. This time, the farmers struggled to break the stick. The village head said, “Together you are stronger than when you work alone.” The farmers fooled their resourches and got rid of the pests in their fields.

My elder sister and I are loving into a new house this weekend, so we decided to do shopping to furnish the place.
First, we went to an appliance story not too far from our new house, and we bought a refrigerator for the kitchen. You really can’t live without one because you have to keep your food cold or froze so it doesn’t soil. Then, we bought a washing machine to wash and dry our clothes. We don’t want to go to a laundromat to do this every week like we used to do when we are in a boarding house. Next, we bought a rice cooked. We certainly need one because it can make life easier. You simply put the rice into the cooked and press the cooking button, then you can do other chores while the cooked is cooking the rice. Finally, we picked up a microwave oven. If we are in a hurry and don have time to cook, we can place the food in the microwave and heat it up quickly.
We haven’t purchased everything we need to furnish our new place, but we think we have the basics appliances to make life more comfortable for now.

SNAKES
Snakes are reptiles (cold-blooded-creatures). They belong to the same group as lizards (the scaled group, Squamata) but from a sub-group of their own (Serpentes).
Snakes have two legs but a long time ago they had claws to help them slither along. Snakes are not slimy. They are covered in scales which are just bumps on the skin. Their skin is hard and glossy to reduce friction as the snake slithers along the ground.
Snakes often sun bathe on rocks in the warm weather. This is because snakes are cold-blooded, they need the sun's warmth to heat their bodies up.
Most snakes live in the country. Some types of snakes live in trees, some live in water, but most live on the ground in deserted rabbit burrows, in thick, long grass and in old logs.
A snake's diet usually consists of frogs, lizards, and mice and other snakes. The Anaconda can eat small crocodiles and even bears. Many snakes protect themselves with their fangs. Some snakes are protected by scaring their enemies away like the Cobra. The flying snakes glide away from danger. The ribs spread apart and the skin stretches out. Its technique is just like the sugar gliders.
How do flying snakes protect themselves?

Singapore to Develop Marine Tourism in Riau Islands of Indonesia
Singapore has expressed its interest in developing marine tourism in Natuna, Anambas and Lingga, three beautiful yet hidden regencies in the Riau Islands province of Indonesia.
According to Riau Islands Deputy Governor, Soeryo Respationo, the trees areas have their own beauty but lack adequate in infrastructure to boost tourism.
Singapore's investment in the tourism sector would perfectly match with the island's need, he said recently. Soeryo said that Singapore Ambassador Anil Kumar Nayar visited the Riau Islands administration on Tuesday to show the country's commitment in developing the marine tourism sector.

Tsunami
Tsunami occurs when major fault under the ocean floor suddenly slips. The displaced rock pushes water above it like a giant paddle, producing powerful water waves at the ocean surface. The ocean waves spread out from the vicinity of the earthquake source and move across the ocean until they reach the coastline, where their height increases they reach the continental shelf, the part of the earth crust that slopes, or rises, from the ocean floor up to the land.
A tsunami washes ashore with often-disastrous effects such as severe flooding, loss of lives due to drowning, and damage to property.
A tsunami is a very large sea wave that is generated by a disturbance along the ocean floor. This disturbance can be an earthquake, a landslide, or a volcanic eruption.
A tsunami is undetectable far out in the ocean, but once it reaches shallow water, this fast traveling wave grows very large.
Tsunami happens because ...

Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) — Astronomer and Scientist. Galileo developed a superior telescope and made many significant discoveries in astronomy. He was sentenced to life imprisonment by the inquisition for his support for the Copernican theory that the sun was at the centre of the solar system. Galileo was born in Florence, Italy in 1564 to a poor but noble family. His parents recognised their child's innate intelligence and talents and so made sacrifices to have him educated. At his father's insistence, Galileo studied the profitable career of medicine. But, at the University of Pisa, Galileo became fascinated in a wide range of subjects. He was also critical of many of Aristotle's teaching which had dominated education for the past 2,000 years. Galileo was appointed to be a mathematics professor at the University of Pisa, but his strident criticisms of Aristotle left him isolated among his contemporaries. After three years of persecution, he resigned and went to the University of Padua, where he taught maths. His entertaining lectures attracted a large following and he was able to spend the next 18 years pursuing his interests in astronomy and mechanics. |
