Ways to Fight Corruption
There are many problems that are faced in big cities. Instead of traffic jams and crime, corruption is one of the biggest problems hardly tackled by governments. Everyone in the international community, like donors, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), governments and citizens, should give their full attention to the corruption problems. Here are some ways to curb corruption:
• assisting countries that ask for help in curbing corruption;
• participating in fighting against corruption; and
• endeavouring to prevent fraud and corruption in donor-financed projects.
The main focus of the World Bank's analysis and consideration of lending to a country is to fight corruption. The World Bank together with the United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime (UNODC) launched a program called the Stolen Asset Recovery Initiative in September 2005. It aims to help developing countries recover assets stolen by corrupt leaders, invest in effective development programs and capture corrupt politicians or government officials that flee to safe havens abroad.
