Picture 5.7 Kintai Bridge

Kintai Bridge is a wooden bridge and one of three most famous bridges in Japan. Its five-arch structure is beautiful. The structure was completed by Kikkawa Yoshihiro of the Iwakuni Domain in 1673. The bridge was destroyed by a typhoon and flooding in 1950, but was rebuilt in 1953. The length of the bridge is 193.3 meters across (210 meters long along the bridge surfce). It is 5 meters wide and is 6.64 meters high.

Kintai Bridge can be crossed from the town-side or mountain-side. Cherry blossom season here is a must-see and the bridge is always crowded with visitors. The Kintai Bridge Festival is held on April 29 and visitors can see a traditional Japanese parade. During the summer months, visitors can also watch Ayu fishing by cormorants at night. In August, there is a firework festival along the river, which features 6000 fireworks.

The Kintai Bridge can be crossed at any time of the day. However, when there is no one at the toll booth, visitors are to pay 300 yen per adult and/or 150 per child into the fare box. The bridge is illuminated at night and a night visit is also recommended.

On the mountain-side, there are various restaurants and gift shops. Visitors can enjoy lwakuni's specialty, Iwakuni sushi. It is famous for its vivid visual presentation using rice, vegetables, egg and fish. There is even a store which sells 100 kinds of soft-serve ice cream. Also on the mountain-side are Iwakuni Castle and lwakuni Museum of Art. The lwakuni Museum of Art has a substantial exhibition of samurai armors and swords.
