Yogyakarta Promotes Commuting by Bike
The Jakarta Post, Jakarta - More than 2,000 people participated in bike-to-work and bike-to-school promotional event staged on Yogyakarta's Alun-Alun Utara Square a Monday morning.
The participants who include civil servants, private-sector employees, students, police, and soldiers represented 30 different bicycle clubs.
"We have to support this program to help Yogyakarta be an environmentally friendly city," Yogyakarta Governor Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X said.
Yogyakarta Mayor Herry Zudianto said the program would benefit the city by reducing pollution levels and global warming contributions. "It's also good fo our health," he added.
Harry said the city administration would allocate funds to construct designated cycle routes if their numbers increased significantly.

Thailand Bans Smoking, Littering at Popular Tourist Beaches
Thailand banned smoking and littering at 24 beachside locations that are popular with tourists over environmental concerns on Thursday, January 31, the ministry of natural resources and environment said.
The Southeast Asian country has been a tourist magnet for decades, from its backpacker heyday in the early 1990s to its current popularity with tourists from mainland China.
Environmental 'rights groups have urged successive governments to protect Thailand's palm-fringed beaches, which are frequently voted among the world's most beautiful, from unregulated development and littering, among other things.
A law that came into force on Thursday is aimed at tackling this problem, said Bannaruk Sermthong, a director at the Office of Marine and Coastal Resources Management.
"Starting today, smoking and cigarette littering are prohibited on beach areas," Bannaruk told Reuters.
"Anyone who wants to smoke must do so in designated smoking areas, not on the beaches."
The law protects 24 beaches in 15 provinces located along the Andaman coast and the Gulf of Thailand. Anyone who violates the law will be taken to a criminal court and could face up to one year in jail, or a fine of up to 100,000 baht ($3,190), or both.

Scientists Reveal First Image Ever Made of a Black Hole
Scientists on Wednesday revealed the first image ever made of a black hole, depicting its hot, shadowy edges where light bends around itself in a cosmic effect.
Assembling data gathered by eight radio telescopes around the world, astronomers created the picture showing the violent neighborhood around a supermassive black hole, the light-sucking monsters of the universe theorized by Einstein more than a century ago and confirmed by observations for decades. It looked llke a flaming orange, yellow, and black ring.
"We have seen what we thought was unseeable. We have seen and taken a picture of a black hole. Here it is," said Sheperd Doeleman of Harvard.
Jessica Dempsey, a co-discoverer and deputy director of the East Asian Observatory in Hawaii, said it remmded her of the powerful flaming Eye of Sauron from the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy.
Unlike smaller black holes that come from collapsed stars, supermassive black holes are mysterious in origin. Situated at the center of most galaxies, including ours, they are so dense that nothing, not even light, can escape their gravitational pull. This one's "event horizon"-the point of no return around it, where light and matter begin to fall inexorably into the abyss-is as big as our entire solar system.
Three years ago, scientists using an extraordinarily sensitive observing system heard the sound of two much smaller black holes merging to create a gravitational wave, as Albert Einstein predicted. The new image, published in the Astrophysical Journal Letters and announced around the world in several news conferences, adds light to that sound.
Outside scientists suggested the achievement could be worthy of a Nobel Prize, just like the gravitational wave discovery.
While much around a black hole falls into a death spiral and is never to be seen again, the new image captures "lucky gas and dust" circling at just far enough to be safe and seen millions of years later on Earth, Dempsey said.
"Taken over four days when astronomers had to have the perfect weather all across the world and literally all the stars had to align, the image helps confirm Einstein's general relativity theory," Dempsey said. Einstein a century ago even predicted the symmetrical shape that scientists just found, she said.
"It's circular, but on one side the light is brighter," Dempsey added. "That's because that light is approaching Earth."

Today, it is not surprising to see that many children are familiar with the Internet. The Internet is important, but controlling children accessing it is a must. This is because of the following reasons.
Websites on the Internet are easily opened by everyone around the world. The websites may contain bad and inappropriate articles, pictures and videos. Children can't filter which one they should see and which they should not.
The Internet can also make children addicted. Moreover, there are many websites providing online games for children. If we can't control them, they will play the games for hours without stopping. This is absolutely not good for them.
Besides, if children access the Internet too often, they may not have a good social life. They won't be able to get along with their friends. Furthermore, this may make them anti-social.
Thus, it is clear that we should control children when they access the Internet.
What will happen if children engage to the Internet too frequent?
