Custom clothing is a tangible representation of cultural material in Indonesia. Traditional dresses have significant values in presenting the heritage, history, and progress of society in a certain phase of civilization.
A traditional dress for men from West Kalimantan, the fourth largest province in Indonesia, is called as King Baba. King means clothing and Baba means men. This shirt is made of ampuro bark or kapuo wood. This type of wood is an endemic plant of Borneo Island that has high fiber content.
In the manufacture of King Baba, ampuro bark is pounded with a hammer and then dipped in the water until only the fiber left. After bending, the skin is decorated with paintings of ethnic Dayak using natural dyes.
West Kalimantan custom clothing for women is usually called King Bibinge. It is made of the same materials with men's clothing. However, the design is more polite with equipment that covers the chest, fabric subordinates, and various other trinkets, such as the hornbill feather decoration, beads, necklaces, and bracelets.
Both types of clothing are always worn either while undergoing daily activities, such as hunting and farming, or when performing traditional ceremonies. Both of these clothes are still used mainly by Kubu Dayak tribes who live in rural and nomadic survive.
