Sumatran Tigers
Sumatran tigers are the smallest surviving tiger subspecies and are distinguished by heavy black stripes on their orange coats. The last of Indonesia's tigersless than 400 todayare living in the remaining patches of forests on the island of Sumatra. Accelerating deforestation and rampant poaching mean this creature could end up like its extinct Javan and Balinese relatives.
In Indonesia, anyone caught hunting tigers could face jail time and pay fines. But despite increased efforts in tiger conservation, the number of tigers decreasing very fast. It is because a lot of people in Sumatra and the rest of Asia look for parts of the tiger body for medical purposes. Besides that, Sumatran tigers are losing their habitat and prey fast, and poaching shows no sign of decline.
The Sumatran tiger is like a typical tiger in appearance, with striking orange fur striped with black above and white underside. However, it is quite a bit smaller than other tiger subspecies, and males have a distinctive, prominent ruff of fur around their necks. Males are larger than females, measuring 2 to 2.25 meters long and weighing up to 140 kilograms. Females weigh 75 to 110 kilograms and are approximately the same length.
The size and physical features of Sumatran tigers are adapted to the region where they live. Their smaller size gives them greater agility for traversing the thick jungle of their homeland. Their paws are slightly webbed to assist with swimming, a major advantage thanks to the abundance of water in Sumatra. They will even live in peat swamps, where swimming after prey is often a necessity.
