Whether it’s a Mozart prelude or a Black Sabbath screamer, music can have a profound effect on our mental health. Studies have shown that listening to music releases dopamine, the chemical in the brain that has a key role in creating good moods. Music, while not a magic key to good mental health or a cure for depression by any means, can be used to regulate mood or reduce some symptoms of anxiety or depression.
(1) Music can be used to calm hospital patients undergoing medical procedures such as brain scans. (2) There is good research evidence that shows that music is more than just a pleasurable pastime. (3) There are songs that produce a greater state of relaxation than any other music. (4) Music listening stimulates a number of regions in the brain. (5) This explains why it has such a strong impact and why it can be good for our wellbeing.
Music can be confessional and cathartic, too. You only have to look at how many songs about breakups, mental distress or addiction there are to see how listening to songs about such things can be helpful. This can be therapeutic for the songwriter or composer and also the listener who identifies with similar experiences.
A study from 2011 in Finland shows that music therapy can be used to improve treatment of depression, at least in the short term. The technique used non-verbal communication to help patients express their emotions. The study, published in the British Journal of Psychiatry, showed a greater improvement than in patients receiving standard therapy. What’s clear is that music can often engage people in ways words can’t.
