How Does Sound Travel?
The music we hear, the angry shout from someone on the street, the call from our friends and other sounds near us travel before we could hear them. Those sound waves from those activities are transmitted through particles in mediums like: solids, liquids, or gases. These mediums are needed to be the vibrating objects in the sound.
In the beginning, the sound waves move through each of these mediums by vibrating the molecules in the matter. The molecules in gases are well separated with no regular arrangement, in liquids they are close together with no regular arrangement and in solids they are tightly packed and usually in regular pattern. Next, different molecules arrangement influences the collision between particles. This collision is what mediates the propagation of sound. This is why the disturbance can also be said as another name of sound.
Sound travels faster in the water than in the air because the molecules in the water are closely packed rather than in the air. Another factor in affecting on how the sound travels is the stiffness factor of the materials. The stronger the bond between the material's atoms, the more stiff it is, and hence, help propagate sound better. Thus, the speed of sound is greater in solid mediums as compared to gases and liquids.
