The question below is based on the following text.
This is one of the best looking films you’ll ever watch. The visuals, the carefully crafted shots, the details—everything is eye candy. From there, Roma adds in so much more to raise its appeal, from impactful and resonant performances, to unexpectedly tense and sudden action. With Roma, Alfonso Cuarón has crafted something truly beautiful in every regard.
But, it’s a not a movie for everyone. Even after getting past a potential language barrier, and after getting past the “it’s in black and white” barrier, the film is still very slow in the first half, serving as more of a vignette than a fully, narrative-driven story. It’s a shame, but being on Netflix, with (effectively) no cost of entry, many may not even pass the first two minutes, which focuses solely on draining water.
What it does well: Yalitza Aparicio is a force. Throughout, the cinematography provides gorgeous snapshots and paintings of life (so good that, in my head, I recall them filled in with vivid color), but the long, circular pan shot towards the beginning of the film was the one moment that sticks out as being the most impressive.
What it could improve on: I think the steep spike in action is effective and powerful, but on the heels of such a long run up, I think I would have preferred a more gradual slope.
As alluded to previously, it’s on Netflix, so there’s no reason not to give it a shot. If you’re a fan of movies as art pieces, or cinematography even on a broad scale, you will likely find something to appreciate.
