Should We Take Public Transit? Perhaps, many people feel that public transportation can not offer as much convenience as personal car, private flight or taxies do. I can tell you it’s not true. Public transit is one of the most amazing ways to travel and enjoy your journey. Here are the reasons why we should choose public transits over personal ones. First, public transportation can help metropolitan areas, such as Jakarta, meet national air quality standards by reducing overall vehicle emissions and the pollutants that create smog. Air quality is often the poorest in urban and suburban areas where traffic congestion is the worst. Public transportation can reduce the need for many separate trips by private vehicles in dense urban areas, replacing many separate emissions-producing vehicles with fewer transit vehicles that generally emit less pollution on a per person basis. Second, public transit helps conserve energy. A bus with as few as seven passengers is more fuel-efficient than the average single-occupant auto used for commuting. The fuel efficiency of a fully occupied bus is six times greater than that of the average single-occupant auto and the fuel efficiency of a fully-occupied train car is 15 times greater than that of the average commuter's single-occupant auto. In terms of energy consumption per passenger mile (energy used to transport one passenger one mile), transit is more energy efficient. Besides fuel use and pollution issue, heavily populated cities like Jakarta and Bandung have no enough space for any more roads. If personal transportations keep increasing while the roads do not, the traffic jam will be much worse. So in order that the city grows well, it needs more people to take public transit. One bus can take up to 60 passengers, so even at half capacity, that’s nearly 20 cars’ worth of space in traffic cleared up, and nearly 20 parking spaces that don’t need to built. Based on the elaboration above, I would one hundred percent say that we should use public transit. It helps us and our environment in many ways.
