Once upon a time, in North Sumatra, there was a man who lived alone. His name was Toba. He was a farmer and he liked to go fishing during his leisure time. However, he sometimes felt lonely so he longed for a family.
One day, Toba caught a big golden fish. It was the biggest catch he ever had. He placed the fish in his bucket and went home happily, thinking that the fish would be enough to last him for the week. Toba then placed his bucket neatly on the ground and went to a nearby forest to gather firewood. To his surprise he did not come back to see his golden fish. Next to the bucket, stood a very beautiful woman. He was very shocked. Instead of a bucket of water, the bucket was also filled with golden coins. The woman told him that she was the fish he had caught earlier.
“The golden coins are my scales.” She said. “I was cursed by a shaman because I rejected an arranged marriage.” She continued.
The man didn't really mind her story. Instead, he fell in love with her. He wanted to marry this beautiful woman. The woman accepted his proposal, but with one condition. She told Toba, “You may marry me if you promise not to tell a single soul that I was once a fish. If you break this rule, a huge disaster, there will be”. He agreed to her condition, and the two got married.
A year later, they were blessed with a son. They named him Samosir.
One day Samosir was ordered by his mother to walk to his father’s farm to bring him his lunch. As Samosir was walking towards his father’s farm, he grew hungry. The meal that was cooked by his Inong caught his attention. It smelled so good that he could not resist it so he ate it. Samosir ate his father’s lunch. When he arrived at his father’s farm, his father was already starving. Samosir told his father that he had eaten his lunch. Toba got very furious.
“Sorry, Among. I was hungry.” Samosir said to Toba.
Toba got very emotional. He got furious at his son for eating his lunch. He said angrily, “You son of a fish!”
Samosir cried. His mother told him to go to the mountain, so he ran with tears running down his face. When he reached the peak of the mountain, a loud thunder blared. Soon, there was a big earthquake followed by non-stop pouring rain. The water from the lake blew up and flooded the village. The entire village was covered, and it became Lake Toba. The mother turned into a fish again, and Toba died. The island where Samosir ran away to is now known as Pulau Samosir.
What was the condition that needs to be fulfilled by Toba to marry the beautiful woman?
He needed to become a successful fisherman.
He had to have lots of fish and many houses.
He had to promise not to tell anyone that the woman was once a fish.
He should keep the golden coins.
