Kita diminta untuk melengkapi dialog di atas dengan mengubah kata yang di dalam kurung dengan bentuk Simple Past Tense ( S + V2 + O/C. ) atau Past Continuous Tense ( S + was/were + V-ing+ O/C. ). Simple Past Tense digunakan untuk menyatakan suatu kejadian di waktu tertentu di masa lampau. Past Continuous Tense digunakan untuk menyatakan bahwa suatu peristiwa/kejadian sedang berlangsung selama waktu tertentu pada waktu lampau. Jika dilihat dari arti kalimat di atas "Dokter (mengatakan) bahwa Tom (menjadi) terlalu sakit untuk pergi bekerja dan dia (perlu) tinggal di rumah selama beberapa hari.", maka tense yangdapat kita gunakan adalah SimplePast Tense . Dengan demikian, perubahankata di dalam kurung menjadi " say = said ", " be = was ", dan " need = needed ". Jadi, jawaban yang tepat adalah " The doctor said that Tom was too sick to go to work and that he needed to stay at home for a couple of days ."
