1) Difference between an atom and a molecule
Atom
An atom is the smallest unit of an element that still keeps the properties of that element.
Example. One atom of gold is still gold. One atom of oxygen is still oxygen.
Molecule
A molecule is made of two or more atoms chemically bonded together. The atoms can be the same or different.
Example. O₂ is a molecule made of two oxygen atoms. H₂O is a molecule made of hydrogen and oxygen atoms.
Short version.
Atom = single building block.
Molecule = several blocks glued together by chemical bonds.
2) Two elements that make up water
Water is H₂O.
It consists of:
-Hydrogen
-Oxygen
No mystery. Two hydrogens, one oxygen.
3) How many atoms are in one molecule of ammonia
Ammonia’s correct chemical formula is NH₃, not NHa. Chemistry is picky like that.
NH₃ means:
-1 nitrogen atom
-3 hydrogen atoms
Total atoms in one molecule of ammonia = 4 atoms
4) Explanation of substances and their elements
I will explain each one in words, like you asked.
Gold
Gold is an element, not a compound.
That means it is made of only one type of atom.
The element present in gold is gold (Au) itself.
Sodium chloride
Sodium chloride is a compound.
It is made of two different elements chemically bonded together.
Those elements are sodium (Na) and chlorine (Cl).
Hydrogen
Hydrogen is an element.
It contains only one type of atom, which is hydrogen (H).
Even when hydrogen exists as H₂, it is still the same element.
Carbon dioxide
Carbon dioxide is a compound.
It consists of carbon (C) and oxygen (O).
Specifically, one carbon atom bonded to two oxygen atoms.
