Why does the Principal make the announcement?

                Trees and plants are also living beings. They need food, water and air for survival. It is interesting to know how they take their food.

                Plants get their food both from the earth and the air. If you look at their roots they are like fine fibers. We call them root hairs. They absorb water and minerals and transport them upwards to the leaves through the trunk and the branches.

                Chlorophyll in the leaves prepare the food like a machine. It converts the carbon dioxide taken from the air and water from the ground into sugar with the help of sunlight. This chemical reaction is called photosynthesis.

                Sugar is further converted into starch and is stored in the plant. The minerals are converted by chemical processes into protein, juice, oil, and other edible materials. The plants use these materials as their food for growth.

                All his life, Guntur had dreamt about travelling abroad. One day his school announced a competition for a scholarship to study in Singapore. As he really wished to go abroad, he followed the competition. He prepared well for the competition because he didn’t want to miss the chance. He won the competition and could go abroad, studying in Singapore.

                Guntur was pleased when he heard about his winning the scholarship. He was going to study in Singapore. He actually felt cheerless when he had to say goodbye to his family and friends. However, he was excited about going to the university and meet people from all over the world.

                The first few weeks in Singapore were not easy for Guntur. Sometimes, he felt homesick and lonely. The other students were nice, but he found it hard to get along with people from the countries with different backgrounds, cultures, and languages. He tried his best to adjust to the new environment. The classes were interesting, but they were hard. He had to spend time in the library many hours every day. Guntur didn’t want to give up. He knew he had to do his best and succeed.

     In 1854, Louis Pasteur was appointed professor of chemistry at the University of Lille.  He demonstrated that organism such as bacteria were responsible for souring wine, beer even milk. He then invented a process where bacteria could be removed by boiling and then cooling the liquid.  Today the prosess is known as pasteurization. He completed the first test on April 20, 1862.

     In 1865, Pasteur helped to save the silk industry. He proved that microbes were attacking healthy silkworm eggs, causing the diseases, and ghe disease can be cured by eliminating the microbes. 

     Pasteur first vaccine discovery was in 1879, with a disease called chicken pox. After accidentally exposing chicken to the attenuated form, he demonstrated that they became resistant to the actual virus. Pasteur went on to extend his germ theory to develop prototype of vaccine for diseases such as anthrax, cholera, TB,  and smallpox.
