Host: What's going through your mind knowing that NASA's opening a new 37,0000 square foot facility in your honor?

Katherine Johnson: You want my honest to answer?  I think they're crazy! [Laughs] I was excited. It was something new. Always like something new. It gives credit to everybody who helped. I didn't do anything alone but try to go to the root of the question. And succeeded there.

Host: What advice do you have for young engineers that will be working in this facility at NASA?

Katherine Johnson: Do your best, but LIKE it. Like what you do, then you will do your best. If you don't like it, shame on you.

Host: What is the key message you want people to take away from your life?

Katherine Johnson: Well, now, if they just did the hard work that I did, which was my job. I did it every day. I never missed a day. Never stayed home playing sick and stuff. But, my problem was to answer questions. And I did that to the best of my ability at all times. Correct or incorrect. But that's my thoery--Do your best all the time.

Host: Can you imagine if the calculations for going to Mars were done in the Katherine Johnson building? How would that make you feel?

Katherine Johnson: I'll be exceedingly honored, greatly honored. But you know, math is the same. What I gave you that answer last year, it's the same now. It's the same But I . . . the main thing is I like what I was doing. I like work. I like the stars and stories we were telling. And it was a joy to contribute to the literature that was going to be coming out. But little that I think it would go this far. [Laughs]
