REHABILITATION CENTRE FOR ORANG UTAN
One of the most interesting animals from Indonesia is Orangutan. An Orangutan is easy to recognize because it has no tail, its arms are longer than its legs and it is cleverer than a monkey. The face of an Orangutan is hairless but when it is old, it has a moustache and beard. Orangutan usually lives and sleeps on trees, but when it grows old and no longer able to swing through the branches, it stays on the ground. There are two kinds of Orangutan, one from Sumatra and the other from Kalimantan (Borneo). Like other wild animals, it is also needs protection. Mount Leuser National Park and Tanjung Puting Reserve are famous for the protection of these animals.
Mount Leuser National Park has a total area of 946,400 hectares in northern Sumatra It became a national park in 1980. The park has more than 320 kinds of birds, 176 kinds of mammals, and 194 kinds of reptiles, This park became famous because it it one of the rehabilitation centre for Orangutan. In this rehabilitation centre, people train Orangutan to live in the forest as wild animal again.
Tanjung Putting Reserve is about 20 meters above sea level in Central Kalimantan. It covers an area of 205,000 hectares. The northern part of the reserve is the rehabilitation centre for Orangutan.
