R.A. Kartini
R.A. Kartini was born in Jepara, April 21, 1879. She was the daughter of one of the nobles who was still very obedient to the customs. After graduating from elementary school, she was not allowed to continue her education to a higher level by her parents. She was stuck while waiting for time to be wed. Young Kartini was very sad about it. She wanted to fight but did not dare for fear of being a disobedient child. To relieve her sorrow, she collected textbooks and other science books which she later read in the garden of the house with her assistant.
R.A. Kartini filled her days by reading. All books, including newspapers, were read by her. If there were difficulties, she always asks her father. Through these readings, Kartini was interested in the progress of European women’s thinking. Her desire was to advance Indonesian women. She began to gather her female friends to teach them writing and other sciences. In the midst of her busy life she did not stop reading and also write letters to her friends who were in the Netherlands. She also wrote a letter to Mr.J.H Abendanon. She requested a scholarship to study in Holland. Kartini did not use the scholarship she got because her parents wanted her to marry with Raden Adipati Joyodiningrat. After marriage, she joined her husband to the area of Rembang. Her husband understood and supported Kartini to establish a women’s school. Due to her persistence, Kartini successfully established School of Women in Semarang, Surabaya, Yogyakarta, Malang, Madiun, Cirebon and other areas. The name of the school is “Kartini School”. Her fame did not make Kartini arrogant, she remained polite, respected family and everyone, and did not distinguish between the poor and the rich.
On September 13, 1904, R.A. Kartini gave birth to a baby boy named Singgih / RM. Soesalit. But the condition of R.A. Kartini worsened despite special treatment, and finally on September 17, 1904
R.A. Kartini passed away at the age of 25 years. Now R.A. Kartini has gone. The progress that has been achieved by Indonesian women today is because of the scratching of her pen during the lifetime in the book “Habis Gelap Terbitlah Terang”
