Ammonia is a toxic product of nitrogen metabolism which should be removed from our body. The urea cycle convers excess ammonia into urea in the mitochondria of liver cells. In the first step, ammonia produced in the mitochondria is converted to carbamoyl phosphate. The nextstep involves carbamoyl phosphate forming citrulline when condensed with ornithine. Citrulline exits the mitochondria and condense with aspartate to produce argininosuccinate. This compound is the cleaved to arginine. Arginine is hydrolyzed by arginase, thus releasing urea and regeneting ornithine.The urea forms, then enters the blood stream, is filtered by the kidneys and is ultimately excreted in the urine.
