This is one of the best looking films you’ll ever watch. The visuals, the carefully crafted shots, the details—everything is eye candy. Roma adds in so much more to raise its appeal, from impactful and resonant performances to unexpectedly tense and sudden action. With Roma, Alfonso Cuarón has crafted something truly beautiful in every regard.
But, it’s a not a movie for everyone. Even after getting past a potential language barrier and “it’s in black and white” barrier, the film is still very slow in the first half. It is served as more of a vignette than a fully, narrative-driven story. It’s a shame, but being on Netflix, with no cost of entry, many may not even pass the first two minutes which focuses solely on draining water.
This film is worth watching for many reasons. Yalitza Aparicio's acting is one of them. She is a force in the film. Throughout, the cinematography provides gorgeous snapshots and paintings of life. The long, circular pan shot towards the beginning of the film was the one moment that sticks out as being the most impressive.
However, there are some aspects that could have been done better. The steep spike in action is effective and powerful, but on the heels of such a long run up. I think most people prefer a more gradual slope.
As alluded to previously, it’s on Netflix. So, there’s no reason not to give it a shot. If you’re a fan of movies as art pieces or cinematography even on a broad scale, you will likely find something to appreciate.
