Platypus
Platypus is a semiaquatic carnivorous egg-laying mammal of the family Omithorhynchidae. They are endemic animal of Australia which became one of animal icon of Australia besides Kangaroo. They can be found at eastern Australia and Tasmania Island. Their scientific name is Omithorhynchus anatinus.
The body of a platypus can reach the size of 50 cm in length with the body weight of 2,4 kg. Their appearance resemble a combination of some animals. Their body look like the body of a mole and beaver in the same time (flat and hairy). The bill and legs are similar to duck, so they have four webbed feet. Their tail is similar to the tail of a beaver. There are some venomous stingers on the feet of a male platypus that they can use to strike the enemy. The fur around their body and tail is waterproof. It helps to keep them warm when they are in the water. The snout of a platypus is not divided into upper and lower parts like a bird’s beak. It is actually a sensory organ that allow them to detect the prey movement in the water. The mouth is located under the bill.
A platypus spend most of their time swimming and foraging for food in a river. They are an excellent swimmer and also a good hunter in the water. They feed on worms, insect larva, and freshwater shrimp. They spend about 12 hours looking for food and the remaining time to rest in their burrow every day. They can live up to 11 years in the wild and around 17 years in captivity.
