Here are the reasons why smoking ban in public places is important. First of all, secondhand smoke has serious negative health consequences. Secondhand smoke exposure obviously has negative effects on somebody’s health. A recent study published in the medical journal Circulation reviewed 13 studies from around the world and found that banning smoking in public places can decrease the rate heart attack hospitalizations over time. Secondhand smoke is also scientifically proven to be one of the causes of headaches, breathing problems, nausea, and even cancer. Second of all, smoking ban will reduce litter. Cigarette butts discarded by smokers constitute the overwhelming majority of litter on beaches, as well as in many other public places like parks, playgrounds, and sidewalks. Smoking bans have been shown to substantially reduce the litter and therefore the costs of cleaning up beaches and other outdoor areas, as well as to improve the overall appearance and attractiveness of the area. The last, the smoke of cigarettes is unpleasant for others. In public places where smoking is permitted, many patrons find the smoke of cigarettes to be unpleasant and annoying. Imagine when you are eating in a restaurant and you have to inhale the smoke of cigarettes from your neighbour table. It’s not only disrespectful, but also annoying and unhealthy. In conclusion, I do not hate people who smoke and I do support their right to smoke in private settings where the impact on other people is controlled and negligible. However, smoking in public places affects other people’s well-being. Therefore, banning smoking in public places is the right and important thing to do.
