The mango is a juicy stone fruit belonging to the genus Mangifera. Mangoes are mostly cultivated for edible fruit. The majority of these species are found in nature as wild mangoes. They belong to the flowering plant family, Anacardiaceae.
The mango originates from South and Southeast Asia, the places where mangoes have been distributed worldwide. The highest concentration of Mangifera genus is situated in Western part of Malay (Sumatra, Java and Borneo), Burma and India. While other Mangifera species, such as horse mango and M. Foetida are also cultivated more on localized basis.
Mango becomes the national fruit of India, Pakistan, and the Philipines. It also becomes the national tree of Bangladesh. In several cultures, its fruits and leaves are ritually used as floral decorations at weddings, public celebrations and religious ceremonies.
