The Indonesian Order of March the Eleventh or “Supersemar” was a significant historical event for Indonesia. On 11th of March, 1966, a document named “Supersemar” was officially signed by the first Indonesian President, Ir. Sukarno.
The document has important roles for Indonesia. The document contained Sukarno’s decision to give the army commander Lt. Gen. Suharto authority. He was demanded to take actions which he deemed as a necessary to recover the chaotic situation during the violent murder in 1965-1966 as soon as possible.
The name of “Supersemar” came from the word “Semar”, the mystic and powerful figure who commonly appears in Javanese mythology including wayang puppet shows. The invocation of Semar was presumably intended to ask for help to Javanese mythology to support Suharto’s legitimacy during the period of authority transition from Sukarno to Suharto which also became the key of the executive power transfer from Sukarno to Suharto.
