How a Tsunami Happens
Tsunami is a Japanese word: “tsu” meaning harbour and “name” meaning wave. Tsunami is waves caused by sudden movement of the ocean surface due to earthquakes, landslides on the sea floor, land slumping into the ocean, large volcanic eruptions or meteorite impact in the ocean.
A tsunami can be generated when the sea floor suddenly deforms and vertically displaces the overlying water. Such large vertical movements of the earth’s crust can occur at plate boundaries. Subduction of earthquakes are mainly effective in generating tsunamis, and occur where denser oceanic plates slip under continental plates. Since the displaced water mass moves under the influence of gravity to regain its equilibrium, it radiates across the ocean like ripples on a pond.
A tsunami always causes a huge breakdown such as property damage, and even loss of life. Most of the damages are caused by the massive tsunami waves when it becomes extremely large in height.
