Menstruation cycle, also known as women’s period, is the monthly series of changes woman’s body goes through in preparation for pregnancy. It happens in four phases.
The first phases is called Follicular Phase. In this phase the menstrual bleeding comes out and is considered as Day 1 of the cycle. While the bleeding happens, the ovaries are simultaneously preparing to ovulate again. Then, after the bleeding stops the uterine lining (also called the endometrium) begins to prepare for the possibility of a pregnancy. It becomes thicker and enriched in blood and nutrients.
The next phase is called the Ovulatory Phase. This is when the egg is released from one of the ovaries and begins its journey down the fallopian tubes to the uterus where fertilization may occur.
The last phase is the Luteal Phase where the corpus luteum starts produces progesterone. If the egg was fertilized and implantation occur, the corpus luteum continues producing progesterone and prevent bleeding from happening. If not, the corpus luteum disintegrates, causing progesterone levels to drop and signals the endometrial lining to begin shedding. Therefore, if fertilization and implantation does not happen, the cycle begins again marking the start of a new cycle, day 1 of menstrual bleeding.
