Apai Gumok and A Witch
Once upon a time, there was a man named Apai Gumok, which meant “fat man”. He also had a fat wife. His wife often scolded him because he only brought a small fish or a small bird after hunting all day long. This made his neighbors laughed at him.
One day, Apai Gumok met a witch when he was hunting in the jungle. He was afraid because the witch looked very frightening with her dirty hair, long dirty fingernails, and toothless teeth. He tried to escape from the witch but no matter which ways he took, he always met the witch.
In desperation, Apai Gumok spoke to the witch, “Why are you following me?”
The witched laughed, “I just want to help you to get respect from the villagers.”
“How? asked Apai Gumok.
“I could help to make you rich and powerful. I can make you a famous hunter.” said the witch.
Apai Gumok could barely believe what he listened to. “There must be a reason behind this. What do you want?”
With an evil laugh, the witch explained. “Simple,” she added, “when you are rich, powerful, and respected, I want you to marry me.”
“But I'm already married,” said Apai Gumok.
“No problem,” said the witch, “I'll change your wife into a little pink pig with black spots on its head. Then you can become a famous hunter and marry me.”
Apai Gumok really wanted to be a famous hunter. He wanted to be rich and respected. He thought of his wife and he knew that his wife was mean to him. However, the witch still frightened him and he did not want to marry a dirty witch. So, he ran back to the village.
When he arrived home, he called his wife and got a response from a little pink pig with black spots on its head. He called his wife again, and the response was still the same. Her wife was not there, and the only living creature that responded to his call was the little pink pig.
Soon, strange things happened. He became a famous hunter and a very good fisherman. One day, he also found gold beneath his house. So he became a rich man.
The next month, the witch asked Apai Gumok to marry her soon but he gave many excuses. Until one day, Apai Gumok asked the witch to swim in the river. Once the pig, the witch and he arrived there, the witch and Apai Gumok swam.
When they had swum into the deepest part of the river, Apai Gumok took hold of the witch's ears and held her head under the water. In a few minutes, she was drowned and died. He swam back to shore thinking that his troubles were over.
“Husband, finally you are here,” said a familiar voice.
Apai Gumok's wife was standing in the shallow water. The little pink pig was nowhere to be seen. Apai Gumok was relieved. He looked at his fat wife and thought how pretty and clean she was. Together they walked back to the village where they then lived happily ever after.
In the story, the problem occurred when …
Apai Gumok loved the pink pig.
Apai Gumok and his wife had no child.
The witch wanted to be Apai Gumok’s friend.
Apai Gumok had to grant the witch’s wish.
