Legalizing Death Penalty In some countries it is legal to kill someone if they have committed a terrible crime. This is called a capital punishment, or the death penalty. However, many questions about this act emerge; Does the death penalty stop crime? Does it give victims justice? Is there a humane way to execute? The answers to this questions show why death penalty should not be legalized in the first place. To start with, majority of scientists agree that the death penalty do not prevent crime. Their opinions haven’t changed for years. The latest issue of the Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology contains a study examining the opinions of leading criminology experts on the deterrence effects of the death penalty. The result is most experts do not believe that the death penalty serve as deterrents to murder. The study builds upon previous research, published in 1996, in which the opinions of 67 leading experts in the field of criminology were surveyed. A majority of respondents also expressed the opinion that death penalty states don’t have lower homicide rates than states where capital punishment has been abolished. Then, some people might think that killing the crime gives the victims justice. They do need justice. Those who have lost loved ones in terrible crimes have a right to see the person responsible held to account in a fair trial without recourse to the death penalty. However, as many families who have lost loved ones have said, the death penalty cannot genuinely relieve their suffering. It just extends that suffering to the family of the condemned person. Furthermore, there is no such thing as a humane method of putting a person to death irrespective of what the state may claim. Every form of execution causes the prisoner suffering, some methods perhaps cause less than others, but be in no doubt that being executed is a terrifying ordeal for the criminal. What is also often overlooked is the mental suffering that the criminal suffers in the time leading up to the execution. How would you feel knowing that you are going to die tomorrow morning at 8.00 a.m.? Besides the facts above, we also have to remember and realize everyone has an inalienable human right to life, even those who commit murder. Sentencing a person to death and executing them violates that right. Crimes must be stopped. But we should not stop crime by doing another crime. We should not prevent murdering by doing murdering. Death penalty is so wrong in many ways, and thus should not ever be legalized. The writer’s attitude toward death penalty legalization is ….
