I Remember When I Was a Child I grew up in a wealthy town. My childhood was very happy. I am used to playing all the time, laughing, and screaming and making things up. My mother was incredibly sweet to me. She never yelled at me or hit me. My father had a great job. My parents had a great marriage. I never heard my parents fight. When I was six, my father developed epilepsy. He had a grand mal siezure while in a meeting with his colleagues. He lost his job, and he never worked again. We had to move in with my grandparents. It was very exciting to get off the bus at my new stop. My grandparents' house was like a castle. Within a couple of years, I started to hear my parents fight. Really yelling and insulting each other. It truly frightened me. At the dinner table, my father used to have siezures. One day, I heard my mother screaming in the kitchen. She was saying, "I hate you! I hate you! Get away from me!" I ran into the kitchen to see what was happening. My mother had had a reaction to some medication she'd taken. Her sister and my grandmother were trying to grab her and calm her down. Later on, she called me and apologized to me. My father tried a new business, but developed heart disease. Although my grandparents never put any pressure on them to move out, as the years went by, I heard my parents fight more and more. It became genuinely 16vicious. By the end of his life, my father had become a very angry person. He was capable of being as cruel as anyone I've ever known. My mother had a hysterectomy, and a mastectomy, but remained sweet. I remember being so frightened that my parents would get divorced. One night, I remember thinking that if my father left, and I never saw him again, I wouldn't be angry at him.
