Ki Hajar Dewantara
 

    Raden Mas Soewardi Soeryaningrat, better known as Ki Hajar Dewantara, was born to a Javanese noble family in Yogyakarta on May, 2nd 1889.

    Because of his aristocratic background, he was able to get a good education. He went to a Dutch primary school and continued in a medical school for native Indonesians, STOVIA. Unfortunately, illness left him unable to finish his studies.

     From when he was a young man, Ki Hajar Dewantara was actively writing to support the anti colonial movement. He was considered an accomplished writer.He also workes as a journalist at several newspaper including Setyotomo, Midden Java, De Express, Oetoesanlndies, Kaoem Moeda, Tjahaya Timoer, and Poesara.

    Ki Hajar Dewantara was involved in both social and political organizations. He promoted the unity of the nation and activities for independence. He emphasized that education could build a sense of nationhood among the students so that they would love the nation and fight for independence. Ki Hajar Dewantara was the one who laid the foundations of national education for Indonesia.
