The Magic Box
(A Story from Taiwan)

Far away in a small village, there lived a poor farmer. He was working and digging up his field when suddenly he found a huge box. He decided to take it home and cleaned it. Both he and his wife didn’t know what they were supposed to do with the box, so they kept it in their house.

Accidentally, his wife dropped an apple into the box. Surprisingly, the apple multiplied and filled the box. She was surprised and tried to take one apple from the box. However, another apple replaced the missing one and the box was never empty.

The farmer thought, “What will happen if I put a coin into this box?” He put a coin into it, and the apples disappeared. They were replaced by the coins which started multiply inside the box. Then the box full of coins. The farmer and his wife were excited. They collected many coins every day and become rich.

Later, the farmer’s grandfather came and lived with them. Since he was very old and weak, the farmer didn’t ask him to work but to take the coins out of the box every day. After several days, the grandfather felt exhausted and wanted to take a rest. However, the farmer got angry.

He yelled to his grandfather, “Don’t be lazy! I only asked you to collect the coins. You should work harder.

The old man didn’t reply to his grandson and continue collecting the coins. Suddenly, he tripped and fell into the box and died. At once, all the money in the box disappeared and was replaced with dead grandfathers. The farmer regretted it, but it was too late. He took out the grandfathers from the box. However, they were so many. Thus, the farmer had to use all the money he got for the funeral.

At last, the box broke down and the farmer and his wife became poor again. He would not have become so unfortunate like this if only the farmer has treated his grand father well.undefined
