Jazz, Low or High Class Music?

    There are several genres of music that we know of, such as pop, rock, jazz, etc. Nowadays, jazz is becoming more popular with young people and considered as high-class music. Jazz music is a mix of blues, ragtime, brass, band music, and dance music. Jazz was created and popularised by African-American musicians in the late 19th and early 20th century. In that era, Jazz was considered low-class music, because the roots of jazz were from slave music (pre-1865).

    In 1917, jazz became popular not only because of its black musicians but also due to a band named the Original Dixeland Jazz, whose members were all white. In addition, the band debuted in New York. The uniqueness of jazz captured everyone's attention. Then more great jazz musicians started to emerge, including Louis Armstrong. Today, jazz is played and listened to by people of all cultures and ethnicities and includes musical elements and styles from all over the world. Jazz has gone from being America's music to being the world's music.
