Kolang-kaling, the fruit of sugar palm tree is soft and bit rubbery, and it adds to the flavor of many sweet snack and drinks. It comes from Aren or Enau (arenga pinnata) trees which belong to palm family also including coconut trees (cocosnucifer), date palms (phonex dactylifera), palmyra palm (barassus flabellifer) and oil palms (licuala arbusculamogea).
This fruit is very popular among moslems in Indonesia especially during fasting month. It becomes the fast-breaking favourite menu for those breaking their Ramadhan Fast with kolak (banana compote). They will find white, opaque and thumb-sized fruit, in the mix.
Kolang-kaling, which can be made into candies of different flavors and colors, are 93.8 percent water 0.69 percent protein, 4 percent carbohydrate, less than 1 percent of ash and about 1 percent roughage. The carbohydrate level in kolang-kaling gives the eater a full of feeling, offers a natural remedy for weight loss and improves digestion.
