A heat wave begins when the temperature reaches uncomfortably high levels, generally 32°C or more. Heat waves can last anywhere from two to five days or several weeks, and they usually occur during the warm summer months. Heat waves are often accompanied by drought or abnormally dry weather.

Heat waves usually occur when the winds and breezes that normally move air around and cool it are not present. As the temperature rises the molecules that make up air moves more quickly, and rise into the atmosphere. As air molecules cool, they slow down and sink back towerd the Earth.

Air pressuere, or atmosphere pressure, is the force of air that presses against other

objects on Earth. Air moves in masses from areas of high pressure to areas of low pressure.

Wind currents are created by the movement of air as it heats and cools, moving from high

pressure areas to lower pressure areas.
