Lightning and thunder are two inseparable natural phenomena. When there is lightning in the sky, thunder always follows. Here is an explanation why the thunder is always heard after lightning . A lightning bolt is a giant spark of electricity in the atmosphere between clouds, the air, or the ground. During a thunderstorm, lightning may happen between opposite charges within the thunderstorm cloud. It may also occur between opposite charges in the cloud and on the ground . When the opposite charges build up enough, this insulating capacity of the air breaks down and there is a rapid discharge of electricity that we know as lightning. The flash of lightning temporarily equalizes the charged regions in the atmosphere until the opposite charges bui ld up again . As a strong sudden flux of charges flows through ai r, the air will be heated to around 18,000° F. This causes the air to rapidly expa nd, creating a sound wave known as thunder.
