Soal memerintahkan untuk mengubah kalimat langsung (direct speech) di atas menjadi kalimat tidak langsung (reported speech). Arti kalimat "She said, "I'm going to meet my penpal for the first time tomorrow."" adalah: Dia berkata, "Saya akan bertemu sahabat pena saya untuk pertama kalinya besok". Reported speech atau indirect speech merupakan kalimat tidak langsung untuk menyampaikan/melaporkan pernyataan seseorang. Kalimat di atas jika disampaikan secara tidak langsung menjadi "Dia mengatakan bahwa dia akan bertemu sahabat penanya untuk pertama kalinya keesokan harinya". Kalimat soal memiliki dua bagian: reporting verb yaitu "she said" dan reported speech dalam tanda kurung. Pola indirect speech yaitu: [Reporting verb + that + Reported speech] Cara mengubah direct speech menjadi indirect speech: - hilangkan tanda kutip. - Gunakan "that" untuk menghubungkan reporting verb dan reported speech. - Reporting verb "she said" berbentuk Past Tense dengan verb 2 "said", oleh karena itu reported speech diubah menjadi bentuk lampaunya. Kalimat "I'm going to meet my penpal for the first time tomorrow" berbentuk Present Continuous Tense diubah menjadi Past Continuous Tense dengan rumus: [S + was + verb-ing + O/C]. - Karena reported speech "I'm going to meet my penpal for the first time tomorrow" dikatakan oleh seorang perempuan (she), maka ubah pronoun "I" dan "my" menjadi kata ganti orang ketiga "she" dan "her". - Keterangan waktu "tomorrow" diubah menjadi "the next day". Reported speechnya menjadi "she was going to meet her penpal for the first time the next day". Jika disusun, kalimatnya menjadi "she said + that + she was going to meet her penpal for the first time the next day". Jadi, jawabannya adalah "a. She said that she was going to meet her penpal for the first time the next day". (Dia mengatakan bahwa dia akan bertemu dengan sahabat penanya untuk pertama kalinya keesokan harinya).
