The platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus) is one of the five egg-laying mammals in existence. It can only be found in eastern Australia. When it was first found by European naturalists, its oddity had them perplexed. Until today, it still amuses schoolchildren and adults alike.

While the platypus body looks like that of a beaver, both animals belong to different orders. Their similarity ends in the fact that they are mammals. The platypus also belong to a different species from the duck, although they share a similar shape of bill.
