The National Monument, or "Monas", as it is popularly called, is one of the monuments built during the Sukarno era of fierce nationalism. Monas is famous among Indonesian people as the highest historic building in Jakarta. It was established to commemorate Indonesia's struggle for independence from the Dutch colonialism.
