Ambers are interesting because they can contain (1) ________ plants from millions of years ago. They have also been used in jewelry for a few thousand years You might have thought that ambers come from (2) ________ Actually, they are created from resins. The difference is that sap transports nutrients around the tree, while resin is semi-solid and acts as a defense response for the plant's immune system. When the tree has a (3) ________. (like a broken branch) or if it is attacked by Insects'or fungi, it exudes thick resin that plugs up the injury and prevents further (4) __________ It seals and sterilizes the injury. When resin is secreted, it's not certain that it will be turned into (5) ________. More often than not it gets weathered away. First of all, the resin needs to be chemically stable and not degrade over time. It has to be resistant to sun, rain, extreme temperatures, and (6) ________ like bacteria and fangi. There are two types of resin produced by plants that can fossilize. Terpenoids are produced by Gymnosperms (conifers) and Angiosperms. They are composed of ring structures made from isoprene (CSHB) units. Phenolic resins are only produced by Angiosperms. An extinct type of trees called medullosans produced another (7) ________ type of resin The next factor is that the resin needs to be in the right conditions to (8) _______. Young amber could be transported in seawater (it floats), and then buried under sediment to fossilise. In the Baltics, glaciers knocked down many trees and buried them, allowing them to fossilize Wet clay and sand (9) ________. preserve resin well because they don't contain much oxygen and the sediments eventually transform into rocka Intense pressure and temperatures cause the rests to become a sold orange gem. First molecular polymerization forms copal (young amber) and then the heat and pressure drive out terpenes and complete the amber (10) _________. Most amber found is about 30-90 million years old, though its not sure how long the process to turn resign into amber actually takes. The oldest amber discovered is from the upper carboniferous, 320 millions of years ago. Most amber are from pine trees or other conifers, though there are a variety of trees that they can come from. However, most amber is from extinct species because the resign was exude so long ago. The Arctic Circle comprises approximately 6 percent e Earth's surface. Of the 21 million square-kilometer Artic region, only about 8 million square kilometers is onshore; the rest of the area is located on continental shelves which are covered y no more than 500 meters of water. Expeditions to the northern regions f Canada, Russia, and Alaska have discovered some 400 oil and gas fields within the Arctic Circle. These fields are capable of producing upwards of 200 billion barrels of oil and natural gas, a quantity representing about 10 percent of the world's known petroleum reserves. And yet, most of the Arctic Circle region remains unexplored. Some geologists believe that the expansive Arctic continental shelves may contain vast petroleum reserves. Recently, a group of researchers from the United States Geological Survey completed an extensive survey of the Arctic region. The members of the Circum-Arctic Resource Appraisal (CARA) team sought to discover the possible petroleum reserves in all areas north of 66.56 degrees north latitude. Due to the relative lack of information on the Arctic Circle region, the CARA team was unable to employ the standard geological techniques of resource assessment, including discovery prospect modeling and deposit simulation. Instead, the scientists employed a probabilistic methodology to attempt to pinpoint areas of the Arctic Circle that had at least a 10 percent chance of harboring oil reserves excess of 10 billion barrels. The model used by the researchers determined the probability that a certain location possesses significant oil reserves by considering certain geologic factors typically associated with oil fields including rock type and formation, and the relative age of the geologic structures. The results of the CARA team's study indicate that 17 of the 25 Arctic Circle regions have a greater than 10 percent chance of holding oil reserves. Geologists on the team further conclude that over 0 percent of the estimated oil reserves in the Arctic Circle occur in just five of the regions, while over 70 percent of the probable natural gas reserves lay in just three of the regions. The author of the passage is primarily concerns with .... A. critiquing a recent scientific study B. reporting the results of a geologic survey C. enumerating the world's potential remaining oil reserves D. advocating increased oil drilling in the Arctic Circle region E. describing a new geologic research methodology
