When announcing his victory to thepeople, he saw Roro Jonggrang, and soon fell in love with her beauty and desperately wanted to marry her.

Princess Roro Jonggrang didn't want to accept the proposal due to her father's death. Being afraid to refuse Bandung Bondowoso, Roro Jonggrang said she would marry him on one condition. "I will marry you only if you can make me one thousand temples in one night as my wedding gifts," the princess made her request. "That will be easy for me," answered Bandung Bondowoso.

With his supernatural powers, Bandung Bondowoso recruited spirits to help him build a thousand temples as she asked. This worried Roro Jonggrang and made her fmd a way to foil his efforts. Finally, Roro Jonggrang had an idea. She woke up all the women in the palace and ordered them to make noises of grinding rice, so that the roosters thought it was dawn and started to crow. Being afraid of the sun, the spirits ran away.

Bandung Bondowoso got frustrated at not being able to complete the request. He missed the thousandth temple, but he knew that the princess had deceived him. "You cheated on me, now I will make you the one-thousandth temple," cried out Bandung Bondowoso. At once, Roro Jonggrang became a statue next to the temples. From then on, people called it the Roro Jonggrang Statue.
