Mae Jamison was the first  African-American woman to travel into space. Mae was born in 1956 in Decatur, Alabama, but grew up in Chicago, Illinois. when she was thirteen, she saw the first astronauts walk on the moon.  It was then she dreamed that she would be an astronaut, too.

In high school, Mae liked math and science best. After college, she went to a medical school and became a doctor. she applied to nasa to join an astronaut program and was accepted.

In 1992, Mae traveled in space for eight days. as an engineer and a doctor, mae did experiments in space. She wanted to find a way to prevent astronauts from getting sick in space. She wanted to find a way to keep their bone strong. The shuttle went around the earth 127 times. When mae looked at earth from space, what do you think she saw? She saw Chicago! the place where her dream began .
