Jessica looked out her window and saw the glow of the lantern inside the tent in the backyard. Her younger sister and her friends decided it would be cool to "camp out." Jessica rolled her eyes. She was fourteen and liad been on real camp-outs. "Fifth graders," she mumbled. "Kids." Jessica picked up a book from her desk. Before plopping down on her bed to read, she cracked the window open a little. "Just in case," she thought, "so I'll hear if there's trouble." She did hear quite a lot, but it wasn't trouble. The three girls were giggling and having a great time. Jessica tried to concentrate on her book but found herself back at the window. A foot with a fuzzy pink slipper hung out the flap of the tent. There was a jar of fireflies in the grass. Jessica glanced at the clock. 10:23. "Shouldn't those kids be settling down by now?" she thought. At 10:27, Jessica heard nothing. She didn't bother to look out the window. She just went downstairs and out into the back yard. The tent was dark, but she still heard hushed voices inside. She opened the flap and stuck her head in. All three girls screamed and got tangled up in their sleeping bags trying to huddle together. Then they realized it was Jessica. "You guys OK?" "We were reading a scary story when our lantern burned out, so we decided to go to sleep. Then YOU showed up and REALLY scared us. You probably did it on purpose, too!" Lisa snapped.
