Kalimat soal "He didn't pass the test; I am sure he ... studied hard for the questions weren't too difficult." berarti "Dia tidak lulus ujian; Aku yakin dia… belajar dengan giat karena soal-soalnya tidak terlalu sulit." Berdasarkan makna kalimat, dapat disimpulkan bahwa bagian rumpang diisi dengan modal yang menyatakan kesimpulan yang sangat mungkin telah terjadi. Untuk menyatakannya, kita bisa menggunakan modal "Must". Rumusnya yaitu: (present time) S + must + be + O/C. (past time) S + must + have + V3 + O/C. Berdasarkan makna kalimat soal, maka bagian rumpang diisi dengan "Mustn't have". Kalimatnya menjadi "He didn't pass the test; I am sure he mustn't have studied hard for the questions weren't too difficult."
