Everything that has mass and takes up space is called matter. Matter ca be found in three states.

First, there are solids. Atoms that are packed tightly together form solids. There are solids do not allow one to move through them. At room temperature, solids do  not change form. For example, if you leave your book on the table, its form will be the same when you return.

Second, there are liquids, which are different from solids. Unlike solids, they change form at room temperature. They will follow the shape of the container into which they are poured.

Third, there is gas. Gases always move around and continuously change form at room temperature. Gases are not noticeable, or only barely, even as you walk through them.
