Ecology is the study of the relationship between living creatures and their environment, including the biological and physical aspects. The physical environment consists of solar radiation or heat, oxygen, carbon dioxide, light, moisture nutrients in the soil, water, atmosphere, and wind. The biological environment consists of all the similar organism, as well as other plants and animal. To study organism in their environment, ecology draws upon other fields such as climatology, hydrology, oceanography, physics, chemistry, geology, and soil analysis. To study the relationships between organism, ecology also involves some disparate sciences, such as animal behavior, taxology, physiology, and mathematics. The term ecology was introduced by the German biologist Ernst Heinrich Haeckel in 1866. It is derived from the Greek oikos (household”), which shares the same root word as economics. Thus, the term implies the study of the economy of nature. Moreover, Charles Darwin theory marks the beginning of modern ecology. In developing his theory of evolution, Darwin stressed the adaptation of organisms to their environment through natural selection. Another scientist that also made an important contribution to the study of ecology is the plant geographer, Alexander Von Humboldt, who was profoundly interested in the distribution around the world.
