Jakarta-On Sunday (28/12), the Indonesia AirAsia Flight QZ 8501 was lost over the Java Sea. The flight was carrying 155 passengers heading to Singapore from Surabaya at 5:36 A.M. The plane was piloted by the Indonesian Capt. lrianto and co-piloted by a French national. The other five crew were Indonesian. Among the passengers, 149 were Indonesian, three South Korean, one Singaporean, and one British.

The Airbus A320-200 jet was supposed to arrive at 8:30 A.M. Singapore Time. It lost contact with air traffic control at 7:24 A.M ., according to AirAsia, but Indonesia's Transportation Ministry claimed it was at 6:17 A.M . J. A. Barata, Transportation Ministry spokesman, said the plane was flying at 32,000 feet when it asked permission at 6:12 A.M. to fly 6,000 higher to avoid clouds. It was seen on the radar until losing contact with the control tower at 6:17 A.M ., while still visible on the ADS-B radar. All contact was lost at 6:18 A.M .

The Air Force spokesman, Air Marshall Hadi Tjahjanto, shared the suspicion that the missing airplane could be located around the Bangka Belitung islands, off the South Sumatra coast. Transportation Minister lgnasius Jonan stated that the search was focused on Belitung island, in an area between Bangka Belitung and Tanjung Pandan . Indonesia's SAR has deployed six ships and two helicopters to the area, while the Air Force has sent a Boeing 737 airplane. Later on, the search will be expanded to the surrounding areas.
