A heat wave is one of the most hazardous natural disasters.  It is caused by a lengthy phase of hot weather, usually followed by high humidity.  This phenomenon happens when the weather in an area is outside of its normal temperature range.  Heat waves are dangerous because they may lead to heat rash, heat syncope, and heat exhaustion.

Heat rash appears on our skin because the sweat ducts are blocked and inflammation occurs.  One may feel itchy and develop red lumps on the skin.  If it happens continually, chronic dermatitis or a secondary bacterial infection may occur.

Heat syncope is the condition where the person faints because of the excessive hot weather.  It is caused by extreme sweating that causes dehydration.  Should those symptoms happen, one should move to a cooler area and avoid direct sunlight.

Heat exhaustion occurs because of dehydration and depletion of water or salt in the body.  Diarrhea, headache, nausea, and vomiting are several common signs.  Should those signs happen, one should drink a lot of water or fluids and find a shady or air-conditioned place to rest.  Fluid replacement with isotonic drinks is often needed.  One should also stay away from heat for a few days.
