Pertanyaan

Read the text carefully and answer the following question! On the 10th of November 1945, there was a bloody battle between Indonesians and the British army in Surabaya. The battle happened as General Robert Mansergh, who took over the position of General Mallaby, dropped the ultimatum which demanded Indonesians to surrender their weaponry to the British army, a part of Allied forces then. He forced Indonesians to do it at 6 in the morning on that day. However, the Indonesian army strictly rejected the ultimatum. They believed that the ultimatum became a great harassment and humiliation for Indonesia, a country that had declared its independence. When the time for the ultimatum was over, the British army started to send attacks to all sides of Surabaya. There was a huge destruction of buildings and facilities caused by them. Besides, they also destroyed hundreds of Indonesian troops, planes, warships, and tanks. They were quite confident that Indonesians would like to surrender on three days. However, Indonesians were not afraid at all and even sent attacks back to the British army under the command of Bung Tomo shouting his legendary motto “ Merdeka atau Mati ”. All parties had the burning passion to win and drive out the colonizer. The battle lasted for 3 weeks. In total, there were about 15,000 Indonesians who died while the victims on the British side were only numbered at about 600. The Battle of Surabaya caused Indonesia to lose weaponry which hampered the country’s independence struggle. However, the following battles provoked Indonesian and international mass to rally for the country’s independence which made this battle especially important for the Indonesian national revolution. Finally, in 1946, the British left Indonesia after fighting against Indonesians along with their nationalism. What would probably have happened if Indonesians had surrendered to the British army at that time?
