Read the descriptions of African Elephant, Arctic Fox and Giraffe below.
African Elephant
African elephants are the largest land animals on Earth. Their large ears look like the continent of Africa. Elephant ears radiate heat to help keep these large animals cool. Elephants like water and enjoy showering by sucking water into their trunks and spraying it all over themselves. They often spray their skin with a protective coating of dust. An elephant's trunk is actually a long nose used for smelling, breathing, trumpeting, drinking, and also for grabbing things, like food. The trunk alone contains about 100,000 different muscles. African elephants have two fingerlike features on the end of their trunk that they can use to grab small items. Both male and female African elephants have tusks they use to dig for food and water and strip bark from trees. Males use the tusks to battle one another.
Arctic Fox
The arctic fox is an incredibe animal that can survive frigid Arctic temperatures as low as -58°F in the treeless lands where it makes its home. It has furry soles, short ears, and a short muzzle--all-important adaptations to the chilly clime. Arctic foxes live in burrows, and in a blizzard they may tunnel into the snow to create shelter. Arctic foxes have beautiful white coats that act as very effective winter camouflage. The natural hues allow the animal to blend into the tundra's ubiquitous snow and ice. When the seasons change, the fox's coat turns as well, adopting a brown or gray appearance that provides cover among the summer tundra's rocks and plants. These colorings help foxes to effectively hunt rodents, birds, and even fish. Like a eat's, this fox's thick tail aids its balance. But for an arctic fox the tail is especially useful as warm cover in cold weather.
Giraffe
Giraffes are the world's tallest mammals, thanks to their long legs and tall necks. A giraffe's legs alone are taller than many humans--about 6 feet . These long legs allow giraffes to run as fast as 35 miles an hour over short distances and cruise comfortably at 10 miles an hour over longer distances. Giraffes sometimes battle one another by butting their long necks and heads. Such contests aren't usually dangerous and end when one animal submits and walks away. Giraffes use their height to good advantage and browse on leaves and buds in treetops that few other animals can reach. Even the giraffe's tongue is long! The 21-inch tongue helps them pluck tasty morsels from branches. The giraffe's height also helps it to a sharp lookout for predators across the wide expanse of the African savanna.
